What is a Yame lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Bon Festival lanterns in Japan, are recognized as traditional crafts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They carry on a tradition of nearly 200 years. Shiraki Kougei continues to preserve this heritage and carefully pass on the artisans' know-how.
Our workshop makes lanterns in the Yame region, the largest artisanal production area in Kyushu, blessed by generous nature. The long history of Yame lanterns, the techniques inherited from our predecessors, and their refined patterns represent the essence of Japanese craftsmanship. We are proud and grateful to continue this work.
Our mission is to pass on these skills, to train young artisans, and to offer creations that fit into contemporary lifestyles thanks to current technologies, while respecting tradition. We hope to share with everyone this novelty born from the meeting of heritage and modernity.
