What is a Yame lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Bon Festival lanterns in Japan, are recognized as traditional crafts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They carry on a tradition nearly 200 years old. Shiraki Kougei is committed to carefully preserving and passing on this artisanal know-how.
Our workshop makes lanterns in the Yame region, the largest artisanal production area in Kyushu, blessed by generous nature. The history of Yame lanterns, the techniques inherited from our predecessors, and their elegant patterns embody the excellence of Japanese craftsmanship. We are proud and grateful to continue this tradition.
Our mission is to pass on these skills, to train young artisans, and to offer creations adapted to contemporary lifestyles by integrating the latest technologies, while respecting the heritage of the past. We hope to share with everyone this novelty born from the meeting of tradition and modernity.
