ABOUT YAME LANTERNS AND SHIRAKI KOUGEI
What is a Yame lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Bon Festival lanterns in Japan, are recognized as traditional crafts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They carry a tradition of about 200 years. Shiraki Kougei carefully preserves this artisanal know-how.
Our workshop makes lanterns in the Yame region, the largest artisanal production area in Kyushu, rich in nature. The long history of Yame lanterns, the techniques passed down by our predecessors, and their refined designs are representative of Japanese craftsmanship. We are proud and grateful to continue this work.
Our mission is to properly pass on these skills, to train young artisans, and to offer products suited to modern lifestyles using the latest technologies, all while respecting tradition. We wish to share with everyone the novelty born from this meeting between heritage and innovation.
