ABOUT YAME LANTERNS AND SHIRAKI KOUGEI
What is a Yame lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Bon Festival lanterns in Japan, are classified as "traditional crafts" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They carry on a tradition of nearly 200 years. Shiraki Kougei continues to carefully preserve and transmit this artisanal know-how.
Our workshop makes lanterns in the Yame region, the largest artisanal production area in Kyushu, rich in generous nature. The long history of Yame lanterns, the techniques inherited from our predecessors, and their refined designs represent the best of Japanese craftsmanship. We are proud to continue this work and grateful to be part of it.
Our mission is to pass on these skills, to train young artisans, and to offer objects suited to modern lifestyles, integrating the latest technologies without being prisoners of the past. We wish to share with everyone the novelty born from the meeting of tradition and innovation.
