Crayons & Mechanical Pencils

Our pencils and mechanical pencils

At Maison Godillot, we offer traditional pencils and mechanical pencils to meet all your writing and drawing needs.

Pencils provide a timeless touch, while mechanical pencils offer the advantage of a consistent lead thickness, usually 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm, and never require sharpening. Each option has specific advantages, thus providing a solution suited to all writing styles.

How does a mechanical pencil work?

The lead of a mechanical pencil is not connected to the outer casing and can therefore move freely whenever you want. When you press a button on your mechanical pencil (or similar), a spring pushes the lead forward by a certain amount, but only a little at a time, allowing you to easily get the perfect lead length.

The advantages of the mechanical pencil

The advantages of a mechanical pencil compared to a classic pencil are numerous. For example, there is no need to sharpen the pencil; you don’t have to interrupt your drawing or writing for that, you don’t have to worry about the mess, and you don’t have to worry about pencil maintenance.

Another advantage of the mechanical pencil is the consistency of the line width. While the line width of wooden pencils varies depending on the date of the last sharpening and frequency of use, the line width of a mechanical pencil is reliable and predictable.

The advantages of the wooden pencil

The advantages of a wooden pencil compared to a mechanical pencil are just as convincing. For example, the tactile and organic sensation provided by wooden pencils is for many much more satisfying for drawing or writing. The ability to sharpen the pencil to a precise point allows you to control the thickness of your lines, making them ideal for sketches, shading, or creating varied textures.

Another advantage of wooden pencils is their ease of use. Free of moving parts or mechanisms, they are easy to use and unlikely to break or malfunction. They are also light and balanced, giving them a natural feel appreciated by many artists and writers.

Available in a range of hardness levels, from the softest leads to the hardest and lightest leads, they offer great versatility for delicate and bold work. This variety allows for greater creative expression compared to the standard leads of classic mechanical pencils.

For those concerned about sustainability, wooden pencils can be an eco-friendly option when made from responsibly sourced wood. They are biodegradable, and high-quality models often come with minimal or recyclable packaging.
