ABOUT YAME LANTERNS AND SHIRAKI KOUGEI

What is a Yame lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Bon Festival lanterns in Japan, are recognized as traditional crafts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. They carry on a tradition nearly 200 years old. Shiraki Kougei is committed to preserving this heritage and carefully passing on the artisanal know-how.

Our workshop makes lanterns in the Yame region, the most important artisanal production area in Kyushu, blessed by generous nature. The history of Yame lanterns, the techniques passed down by our predecessors, and their refined designs represent the excellence of Japanese craftsmanship. We are proud and grateful to continue this tradition.

Our mission is to pass on these skills, to train young artisans, and to offer objects adapted to contemporary lifestyles through current technologies, without being limited by the values of the past. We hope to share with everyone the novelty born from the meeting of tradition and innovation.
