COVER DESIGN

Enshu Orimono is a traditional Japanese weaving art, passed down through generations in western Shizuoka Prefecture since the Edo period. Thanks to the region’s mild climate, cotton and indigo cultivation have thrived here for centuries, giving rise to a sustainable textile industry. Production continues today on traditional looms, allowing for a wide range of textile expressions.

Carefully crafted from the yarn twisting stage to achieve a soft handwoven texture, this fabric captivates with its rich colors and variety of threads.

MINI NOTES

Nothing beats handwriting to capture a flash of inspiration or quickly jot down an idea. This series of pocket notebooks comes to life through your choice of cover and refill.

The cover, made from carefully selected fabrics, can be reloaded again and again. Choose your refill from two styles:

  • a notepad with detachable sheets,

  • or a spiral notebook that keeps your pages intact.

The B7 size fits perfectly in your hand.

The notepad, with its easy-to-tear sheets, is ideal for quick notes or leaving a message for someone. Used as a desk pad, it offers a neat appearance thanks to its cover.

The spiral notebook keeps all your notes in place, perfect for ideas to revisit or writing on the go. The perforated pages can be neatly removed if needed.

A small notebook, yet incredibly inspiring, inviting you to write. Besides being very practical, it can also serve as a mini sketchbook thanks to its high-quality pages compatible with fountain pens.

From thread to notebook: a story woven by Enshu Orimono

Kakimori notebooks are designed like fashion collections, with fabrics carefully selected for each season or collection. Previous editions included fabrics from fashion brands, kimono makers, or traditional textile producers. We are pleased to present our latest collaboration: Enshu Orimono.

Enshu Orimono is a traditional Japanese woven textile, with craftsmanship passed down in western Shizuoka since the Edo period. Thanks to the region’s mild climate, cotton and indigo cultivation have thrived here for centuries, leading to the birth of a cotton weaving industry as early as the Edo era.

We were introduced to Enshu Orimono by Itohen, a local curation company whose goal is to promote Japanese craftsmanship. Located just steps from our shop, this company runs Sanchi No Gakko (The Regional Production School), which offers comprehensive textile production training for those wishing to work in the textile or fashion industry. It also organizes various media projects, exhibitions, and events celebrating the textile world.

For the creation of our new notebooks, the Itohen team helped us select a range of Enshu Orimono fabrics, giving us the opportunity to discover more of these beautiful traditional textiles.

Enshu Orimono is renowned for its cotton weaving, and one of its distinctive features is the type of loom used. While modern high-speed looms produce uniform fabrics more efficiently, Enshu Orimono is still woven on traditional shuttle looms, where a shuttle carries the weft thread. Although slower and less efficient, this process creates a tightly woven fabric with a rich texture that highlights the depth of the pattern. Even today, this region has the highest concentration of traditional shuttle looms and is home to many textile factories with diverse identities.

The Itohen team visits each factory to hand-select new fabrics still in development. Each manufacturer has its strengths and unique qualities, allowing them to find unique textiles and listen to the story and passion of each artisan.

Here are the five fabrics chosen by Itohen for Kakimori, coming from four different factories, along with what makes each of them special.
