Little wooden tray by Japanese maker Hasami Porcelain.

Inspired by the Japanese traditional lacquer boxes, the size of HASAMI PORCELAIN products are based on a fixed module. Mugs, bowls, trays… all share the same diameter so they can be stacked freely, stored and transported easily. They are also multi-functional. For example, a tray can also be used as a lid.

Straight lines represent the essence of traditional Japanese aesthetics. The curves are the result of the inevitability of function and production. The rhythm and echo of the clean lines, created by stacking, enhance the harmony and beauty of the design.

HASAMI PORCELAIN
Hasami is a village in Kyushu (Nagasaki prefecture) specialized in making porcelain using Amakusa stones for over 400 years. Hasami-yaki is well-known for its functionality and easthetic intended for a daily use.
HASAMI PORCELAIN collection was designed by Takuhiro Shinomoto founder of Tortoise in Venice, CA. Inspired by the Japanese lacquer boxes (Jubako), the size of HASAMI PORCELAIN products are based on a fixed module so they can be stacked freely, stored and transported easily. They are also multi-functional.
A pure and timeless design that enhances the tactility by adding an organic touch.
A COLLECTIVE ORGANIZATION
In Hasami, each product is passed onto different craftsmen in various parts of the village to undergo a specific step of handwork until the product is completed. This organization of labor in the Hasami village has been passed down for generations since the beginning of the Edo period. This collective organization sustains several workshops while guaranteeing the best quality of production.
INDIVIDUALITY
Another integral part of this production process is the understanding of the four seasons, and how their conditions can affect the outcome of the final product. Seasonal conditions such as temperature and humidity are organic factors that determine how the redness of the raw soil deepens throughout the clay, or how the glaze runs over the textured surface. These natural variances in color and texture are what ultimately create the personality that defines each Hasami Porcelain piece as its own aesthetically unique product.
