MORE ABOUT SAITO WOOD
In 1948, Isamu Saito founded “Saito Woodworks” in the village of Ieyama, located in the Shimokawane district, Shizuoka prefecture. In 1956, the company completed the production of a set of boxes using the innovative technology of cylindrical molded plywood. Two years later, in 1958, the company moved to the city of Shizuoka and became “Saito Plywood Crafts.”
In 1959, the famous basket “No.901” was finalized, a product that remains iconic to this day. In 1966, the subsidiary “Saito Wood” was created to serve the domestic market. It focuses on selling products to inns, hotels, and restaurants, a business that continues to this day.
The technique used
Molded plywood is made by layering and gluing sheets of wood veneer 0.2 to 1 mm thick, arranged with cross grain, in a mould subjected to pressure and heat. This technique allows for a strong, thin, and light curved shape, characteristic of plywood.
